Scientists are now able to grow miniature organs in a dish. They are not organs in the full sense – they lack blood vessels and nutrient supply. They only grow to the size of a grain of rice, but they are the first instance of creating functional organ units outside of the body. Organoids open the door towards personalized drug testing and regenerative medicine, as we derive them from the stem cells that are unique to each person and patient.

What’s so hard about growing Organoids?
Organoids are grown from 3D spheres of stem cells. They require a combination of special materials and nutrients to make them become the tissue we want. The methods used today still have considerable limitations for routine application. They lack in user-friendliness, reproducibility, scalability and compatibility with high-content imaging.
